DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE...
White Hare began the way many meaningful things do—with curiosity.
What started as an exploration into creating thoughtful gifts slowly became something more. As ideas evolved and experiments unfolded, one discovery kept pulling me deeper: the quiet power of small rituals that help us slow down, breathe, and reconnect with ourselves.
Without realizing it, I had followed a path that felt a lot like falling down a rabbit hole of self-exploration and self-care.
WHEN TIME DISAPPEARS
Creating has always been a part of who I am.
As a child, I spent hours drawing, often so absorbed in my work that I would lose all sense of time. The sun would go down before I even noticed the day had passed. That feeling stayed with me through art college, where time seemed to move just as quickly whenever I was creating art.
Life eventually pulled me in a different direction, and I never found a way to pursue art the way I once imagined. But when I started White Hare and began experimenting with candles and soapmaking, that familiar feeling returned. Hours would slip by while working with wax, oils, and fragrance—the kind of focus that quiets the mind and settles the soul.
I realized that creating had always been my meditation—White Hare became the place where I found it again.
THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS
Around the same time this business was beginning to take shape, I was entering a new stage of life. Like many women in their fifties, I was navigating the changes that come with time—the physical and emotional shifts that arrive with perimenopause and menopause. It is a season that often asks us to rediscover ourselves.
During that time, I realized how important the small rituals of self-care had once been in my life, and how easily they disappear when we—as mothers, grandmothers, and women, are devoted to caring for everyone else, ahead of ourselves.
THE RITUALS THAT RESTORE US
To relieve stress, one of my favorite rituals was a quiet (and very long) Sunday candle-lit bath. It was time behind a locked door where the outside world paused for a while. A moment to breathe, reflect, and reset before the week ahead.
When the water drained and I stepped out of the bathroom, I always felt restored, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well—like I could begin again and face the week ahead. As life would have it, during my menopause journey, both of our bathtubs cracked and could only be used for showers. The absence of my baths and the start of menopause coincided with a decline in my mental and emotional health. It was during this time that I realized just how important those long Sunday candle-lit magnesium filled baths were.
So, those quiet and peaceful moments—lighting a candle, drawing a bath, taking time to breathe—became the inspiration behind everything White Hare creates.
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
The name White Hare was inspired by the curious rabbit from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. In the story, the hurried White Rabbit is always watching the clock. His appearance marks the moment Alice begins her journey into Wonderland.
He is not the danger—He is the invitation.
Sometimes people interpret the White Rabbit as something ominous—a sign that something difficult is coming. But the White Hare was never meant to represent fear. He is simply a messenger of time. A quiet reminder that life moves quickly. That day’s pass whether we notice them or not. That we shouldn’t wait forever to care for ourselves, to slow down, or to enjoy the small and sometimes fleeting moments that make life feel worthwhile.
The White Hare isn’t chasing us—He’s gently encouraging us to follow.
GIFTS FOR THE JOURNEY
White Hare still honors its origins as a gifting company. Our candles, soaps, and bath products are designed to be shared—thoughtful gifts that invite someone to pause, breathe, and create a small moment of calm. Whether given to celebrate a milestone, say thank you, or simply remind someone they deserve a little rest, each piece is meant to turn an ordinary moment into a ritual. Because sometimes the most meaningful gift we can offer someone is time.
THE NEXT CHAPTERS
